About Under the Nile:

Under the Nile was started by Janice Masoud in 1998 with her vision of bringing organic baby clothing into the mainstream. Under the Nile brand has come to symbolize the best of the organic movement: A care for others, a care for the environment and a care for company success all acting in harmony.

The idea for Under the Nile came when Janice noticed her children's skin was sensitive to certain cotton clothing products. After further research, she discovered that different elements such as dyes are introduced into cotton that can cause skin reactions particularly with babies and toddlers. Her research also pointed her toward Egypt which grows the best cotton in the world, a nice piece of serendipity since her husband Mohammed is Egyptian.

The duo traveled to Egypt in search of organic cotton, a trek that led them to the SEKEM Initiative Farm, a model community for biodynamic agriculture and a belief system that aligned with Under the Nile. A partnership was formed, setting the stage for Under the Nile as Janice embarked on designing the company's first collection.

Today, the Under the Nile collection includes over 200 products ranges from bibs to toddler dresses to toy fruits and vegetables all formed from 100 percent organic cotton carrying the USDA Organic seal. Under the Nile is also proud participants of the 13-Villages-Project -- a SEKEM initiative to fight against poverty and its causes in rural Egypt. Under the Nile's "Veggin' Out" collection of stuffed fruits and vegetables are made exclusively through this program.

Janice and SEKEM have together identified 13 nearby villages in the region of Sharkeya in desperate need of better livelihoods and healthier living conditions. Many women in these villages, though capable of working, are unable to leave their villages to do so because they are needed to care for family members. So Janice brought the work to the villages. To ensure quality, each village is trained and assigned responsibility for making one style of Under the Nile.s stuffed fruit and vegetables toys. A carefully selected woman from the village manages the workers and trains new women wanting to participate. When the women are ready to start production, Under the Nile cuts the fabric, prepares the embellishments, and delivers the raw materials to the village. The date product is needed by and a fair wage for the labor required to complete the work is agreed upon at that time. The women are paid when the toys are picked up. This has not only brought money to the women of the villages, but pride. They, as well as the entire village, are proud of what they are doing.
